Indexing with change gears

A simple mandrel is used to hold change gears in the left side of the spindle on the South Bend 9" lathe.

Slitting the mandrel using the milling attachment and a slitting saw.

Together with a brass nut and an arm with a tooth to engage the gear all combinations available from the gears may be used for indexing the chuck.

An example of indexing: A knob made by turning the tool sideways in the toolpost and running the carriage back and forth while indexing the work.
